Excuses for Bad Driving

Road safety is probably the most important topic on anyone’s lips when it comes to any car related business or manufacturer. A recent survey has brought to the surface a number of alarming excuses for bad driving.

The first of which of was an admission by 70% of the people surveyed to driving badly on British roads. Not exactly a reassuring stat now is it?

Secondly, 45% of motorists feel angry when they witness bad drivers. Add to that the fact that 83% of motorists encounter bad drivers on a regular basis and we have a whole lot of bad, angry drivers on our roads.

As bad as it is, I would suggest public transport from here on in.

The survey of 3,000 motorists reveals drivers opt to give a handful of excuses in a terrible attempt to try and justify their actions Here is the dreadful top ten list of reasons given to excuse their bad habits.

Top Ten excuses for bad driving:

  • Tiredness
  • Rushing due to lateness
  • Frustration with bad driving
  • Exhaustion
  • Nervousness on the roads
  • Road Rage
  • Hangover
  • Feeling Grumpy
  • Rowing with a partner
  • Boredom

Reasons such as tiredness, rushing due to lateness, exhaustion, nervousness and road rage come out top of the excuses, as 75% of drivers admit that they have knowingly driven badly, with 35% confessing to this on a regular basis.

Motorists are becoming increasingly annoyed with other road users and their bad habits. Nearly half of motorists surveyed confessed to feeling angry when they witnessed bad drivers, 44% of motorists said it leaves them feeling frustrated and 34% said it made them worry.

Interestingly, 32% of 18-24 years old said they have driven badly due to tiredness, with a further 15% saying they have driven with a hangover which affected their habits.

It also emerged that 34-44 years were the biggest offenders of rushing due to lateness, with a quarter (25%) giving this reason to justify their behavior behind the wheel.
